During a decade-long civil conflict, Abby Córdova began her intellectual journey growing up near San Salvador, El Salvador’s capital city.
On Nov. 16, 1989, Córdova was 12 years old when the country was rocked by the assassination of six Jesuit priests, along with their housekeeper and her teenage daughter, by a gang of soldiers from the US-backed national army for protesting social injustice.

Abigail Córdova earned two master’s degrees and a PhD in political science from Vanderbilt University.
She also worked as the leading researcher on the Latin American Public Opinion Project’s effect evaluation of USAID’s Central America Regional Security Initiative.
She previously worked as an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Kentucky.
Abigail has also worked as a consultant for the World Bank’s Latin America and Caribbean Poverty and Gender Department.
More recently, she was the primary investigator of a USAID-funded study that established a technique for measuring community resilience in high-crime environments.
Abby Córdova’s research focuses on the effects of inequality and marginalisation for democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean, incorporating subjects such as crime and violence, gender inequality, economic inequality, and international migration.
Her research is to uncover public strategies that can promote the well-being of underprivileged persons while also advancing democratic consolidation globally.
As a survey research methodological expert, Córdova’s work heavily relies on public opinion and elite survey data.
