Annette Hellbusch was evacuated to an Omaha hospital on Monday after a two-vehicle collision just north of Columbus so she could receive medical attention for her injuries.
According to Platte County Sheriff Ed Wemhoff, deputies from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office were called to a two-vehicle collision with potential injuries at the junction of 53rd Street and 48th Avenue at 6:57 p.m.
According to the inquiry, Dan Hellbusch, 61, of Columbus was operating a 1994 Chevrolet van southbound on 48th Avenue. Ramon Grado Saenz, 31, of Columbus was operating a 2018 Chevy Traverse as it was headed north on 48th Avenue.
Wemhoff said that the collision occurred when the Traverse being driven by Saenz started to turn westbound onto 53rd Street at the intersection of 53rd Street and 48th Avenue. Heavy front end damage was sustained by both vehicles.
Annette Hellbusch, 58, of Columbus was a passenger in the van and was taken to the Columbus Community Hospital by Columbus Rescue. Later, she was flown by medical helicopter with critical injuries to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha. Wemhoff said that none of the other passengers in either car needed medical assistance.
Traffic along 48th Avenue near the crash scene remained closed for about an hour and a half. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Columbus Police Department.
Alcohol use is not suspected, Wemhoff said, and seatbelt use wasn’t immediately known.
The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
