Arthur Schmidt was born Arthur Robert Schmidt late and he died at his home in Santa Barbara, California, on August 5, 2023, at the age of 86. He was an American film editor with about 27 film credits between 1977 and 2005. He had an extended collaboration with director Robert Zemeckis from the Back to the Future film trilogy to Cast Away.

Schmidt has been nominated for major editing awards including the BAFTA Award for Best Editing for Coal Miner’s Daughter in 1980, Back to the Future with Harry Keramidas, in 1985, The Last of the Mohicans with Dov Hoenig, 1992, and Cast Away in 2000. He was the executive producer for The Labyrinth in 2010.

Schmidt was born in Los Angeles on June 17, 1937, and the son of film editor Arthur P. Schmidt and his wife Madeline Schmidt Groenewegen. Schmidt’s editing began when he watched his father editing the film Sunset Boulevard in 1950. He graduated from Santa Clara University with a bachelor’s degree in English.

Schmidt’s father was an American film editor and producer. He had more than sixty film credits for editing from 1934 through 1962. In the 1950s, Schmidt edited five films directed by Billy Wilder, who has been called one of the great 20th Century filmmakers.

Schmidt was not the only child of his parents. He has a brother who is called Ron Schmidt. Ron is a writer and an actor who is known for Franz Jaegerstaetter: A Man of Conscience in 2009, Despite Darkness: A Spiritual Encounter with Auschwitz in 2008, and The Labyrinth in 2010.
