The Westinghouse High School community is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of the iconic basketball player, Jamarcus Ellis, who tragically lost his life in a car collision with a viaduct pillar near Pilsen on the Lower West Side. This 38-year-old basketball legend, celebrated for his extraordinary skills and contributions to the sport, was immediately rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital with critical injuries, but unfortunately, he was later pronounced deceased. His legacy is something that the community will forever hold close to their hearts.

Friends and loved ones took to social media to express their grief. Shay Campbell posted on Facebook, “I’m so hurt about my BFF Jamarcus Ellis how? Why? U was always part of the crew and always will be love u forever.”

Known affectionately as “Tone-Tone” in the Chicago area, Ellis made a profound impact on the basketball world. He was an integral part of Westinghouse’s success, leading the team to victory in both city and state championships during his sophomore year. His remarkable talents earned him a spot on the First Team All-State in 2004, alongside notable basketball figures such as current Duke head coach Jon Scheyer and NBA veteran Shaun Livingston.

Beyond his high school achievements, Ellis continued to excel in his basketball career. He played at a junior college before joining Indiana University for the 2007-2008 season. Fondly referred to as “Tom-Tom” by his close friends, he later showcased his skills at Oklahoma City University during his final year of college.

Ellis was a cherished member of the basketball community. Alongside his longtime friend and former teammate, Deandre Thomas, he continued to demonstrate their passion for the sport. Their participation in the over-35 league at Marquette Park, along with their notable contributions to the Westinghouse alumni team, led to an impressive three consecutive championship wins.
