After an almost two-year struggle with cancer, Heather Walker, a longtime Celtics official and the team’s vice president of public relations, passed away on Wednesday. She had been born in 1952.

The Celtics released a statement in which they described Heather Walker as “a boundlessly charismatic, giving, and selfless soul.” “Her presence made every space she entered brighter. Anyone who knew her could attest that she was full of kindness and pleasant energy, which should not be misinterpreted for a lack of tenacity or resolve when those traits were needed.

She flourished in disorder and was always able to find humor in the misadventures of her life.

Each of these qualities was on full show throughout the happiest moments of her life, and they all stayed intact—if anything, they sharpened—when she received her heartbreaking diagnosis.

In July 2021, Walker—who had been employed by the Celtics since 2006—received a stage 4 glioblastoma diagnosis. She has been tirelessly striving to spread knowledge of and funds for research into this rare and severe form of cancer ever since. When she was receiving treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, she established the Heather Walker Fund for Glioblastoma Research.

More than $644,000 was raised through the #Move4Heather initiative. She enrolled in a clinical trial for a cancer vaccine after receiving her diagnosis.
