It depends on the show, although as seven-time contestant Eric Mueller suggests in his answer to to Game Shows: When a person is selected as a contestant on Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, do they pay for travel and hotel costs?, most shows do not pay for travel expenses:

Shows with million dollar+ prizes usually pay in installments over 20 years. When you win prizes you owe the taxes on them before they are released (or sell them off to someone who wants them or take a cash settlement It depends on the show and what you win.

You can’t opt for cash-value instead of prizes. You might think an easy solution would be to request the cash value of prizes instead — but game shows won’t let you do that. You’re entitled to the exact prize you won, or nothing. But of course, the rules aren’t the same in reverse.

Can you get paid to be on the show?
