In 2016, McEachin was elected to represent Virginia’s 4th District. He was just elected to a fourth term in Congress, where he has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ rights and civil liberties.

McEachin spoke about his struggles with his health at the opening of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” earlier this month.
Early detection is crucial, McEachin added. Many of you have followed my progress and are aware that I’ve dealt with a variety of health problems. My colon and rectal cancers required him to undergo radiation treatment, which likely accounts for the most of his health problems.
Everybody should get checked out regularly, he said.
Don’t play dumb. Don’t make the same mistake I did. “Get yourself to a doctor,” McEachin said.
On Monday evening, Rountree released the following statement.
The loss of our leader and friend, Congressman Donald McEachin, has left all of us devastated. We have watched him fight and ultimately overcome the complications of his 2013 colorectal cancer with great courage over the past few years. The people of Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District lost a champion who would never give up fighting for them and who always prioritized them this evening. Our office will remain open and we will continue to serve the people until a new representative is elected. Privacy at this time is greatly appreciated by the family. Within the next few days, announcements regarding the arrangements will be made.
City of Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney released a statement Monday night in which he praised McEachin as a “true public service” and asked for prayers for McEachin and his family.
McEachin was a “valiant fighter until the end,” Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin said in a statement released Monday night.
