Abilene medical leader Dr. Gary Goodnight has died.
According to his obituary, he was 70 years old when he passed away at his family residence on Friday.
Dr. Goodnight practiced medicine for more than 30 years and eventually transitioned to a clinical practice with his daughter at their Abilene Allergy office.
Dr. Goodnight has a long list of accomplishments throughout his medical career.
He was Chief of Staff for Hendrick Health from 2011 to 2012, a member of the Medical Executive Committee for ten years, and he was appointed medical director/health authority of the Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District in 2021.
However, Dr. Goodnight’s list of accomplishments and community outreach stretches further than his medical career.
He served as chair of the board of the Presbyterian Medical Care Mission, chaired the Exhibition and Collections Committee and the Science Committee for The Grace at Heritage Square, and he was also an active member of First Baptist Church.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 27 from 5-7 p.m. at the home of Jeff and Susan Braaten located at 1314 Elmwood Drive.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Abilene located at 133 North 3rd Street.
The burial will be Friday morning at 10 at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery located at 3226 FM 89, Buffalo Gap.
The family asks that memorials be made to The Grace Museum, the Presbyterian Medical Care Mission, or any charity.
