The community mourns the loss of Robert “Zippy” Michael Bankosh, a dedicated firefighter with Forbes Road Volunteer Fire Department, who passed away at the age of 42 on November 5, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Zippy’s Early Life
Born on June 14, 1981, in Greensburg, PA, to Thomas and Judith (Sidehammer) Bankosh, Zippy graduated from Penn Trafford High School in 2000. He pursued a career as a Heavy Equipment Operator with the Penn Township Road Department.

A Respected Firefighter
Forbes Road Vfd, through a statement shared on Facebook, expressed their deep sorrow at the loss of their brother, Robert “Zippy” Bankosh. Zippy had been a valuable member of their department, bringing with him years of experience and having served as a former chief in a neighboring department. Despite his extensive background, he remained humble, joining as an entry-level firefighter and continually advancing his training. Zippy was known for his ever-present smile and his remarkable ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His presence brought comfort during stressful incidents, and his fellow firefighters could breathe a sigh of relief when they saw him arrive.

The statement read, “Zippy, you will be forever missed by our department. Our hearts go out to your family that you cherished so much. Keep a watchful eye over your fellow brothers and sisters. Rest easy, our friend, until we meet again.”
