According to a recent Facebook update, Poppy the groundhog, a well-known figure in Lancaster County, has passed away.

Poppy’s Facebook page announced that she had left for the great burrow in the sky. “With profound grief we share that our beloved beautiful ambassador, Poppy the Groundhog has left us,” it said.

Bill Murray and Poppy, a Lancaster resident, costarred in a 2020 Super Bowl ad. She enjoyed posing for photographs with kids at educational events and even predicted the Super Bowl victor.

Poppy began displaying abdominal discomfort, according to her Facebook page, just as the staff at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation were getting ready to leave for the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Annual Symposium.

At that point, all options faded and Poppy’s fate was decided for us,” read the Facebook post.

Poppy was humanely euthanized at 4:18 a.m. on Feb. 28.

At the Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, she is succeeded by her fellow ambassadors including her groundhog brother, Elliott, her eastern gray squirrel sister, Snags, and other resident squirrels such as Finnigan, Crazy Boy, Lucy and Pete.

“The entire Acorn Team is shattered. Poppy was such a bright spot in this world,” said organizers.

Born on April 1, 2019, Poppy was nearly four years old at the time of her passing.
