Afghan refugee Shahzada Zadran, 19, was killed after falling through a frozen pond in Prince William County on Christmas Eve. He was a resident of Falls Church. According to his relatives, he just arrived in the country in September.

At the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center on Wednesday, family, friends, and members of the Muslim community gathered for a prayer service in memory of Shahzada Zadran of Falls Church.

His close friends and family praised him as wise, kind, and honest.

Brother of the victim Ahmad Yusuf Zadran told WUSA9 that at this time, all they could do was pray for their brother.

He was everything to me.

Investigators in Prince William County reported that he passed away on Christmas Eve when he and a 20-year-old friend went through the ice and into a pond close to the Piedmont Club Golf Course in a gated community of Haymarket.

The acquaintance succeeded in pulling himself out of the water and attempted to locate Shahzada Zadran, but when he was unable to, police say he proceeded to a nearby house and dialed 911.

The idea is to return Shahzada Zadran’s remains to Afghanistan, where his parents and sisters and the rest of his family will bury him.
