Gus Manning, the final surviving administrative link with close ties to football coach Gen. Robert Neyland, died on Sunday after 50 years of service in the University of Tennessee sports department. He was 99.
Manning was admitted to the hospital in 2017, then transferred to a rehab facility, and then, that summer, to a nursing home. In 2019, he was admitted to the UT Athletics Hall of Fame.
Manning played quarterback for Rule High School, was born in Knoxville, began going to UT games in the 1930s, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
After the war, he enrolled at UT, made the football team as a walk-on, earned a baseball letter, and earned his degree in 1950. For the remainder of his career, he remained with the Vols.
A funeral mass will be held at The Cathedral of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on February 20 at 10 a.m. ET (711 S. Northshore Drive). After the mass, the family will host friends in the cathedral hall. The family decides on a private funeral.
