James Douglass West, who spent ten years writing for Lassie and appeared as a child actor opposite Roddy McDowall and Natalie Wood, has passed away. He was 93.

According to his son, Daniel West, West passed away on Sunday at his Studio City residence from natural causes.

In addition to writing California (1963), a Western starring Jock Mahoney, West also wrote the original screenplay for the musical Hey Boy! Hey Girl! (1959), starring married couple Keely Smith and Louis Prima.

West joined the writing team of CBS’ Lassie in 1963 after working for writer-producer Charles Marquis Warren on NBC’s The Virginian for about a year as a story editor.

He was working when the collie’s family—played by June Lockhart, Hugh Reilly, and Jon Provost—moved to Australia and Lassie was partnered with Robert Bray’s portrayal of a Forest Service Ranger.

West informed his son that the longtime sponsor of the program, Campbell Soup, insisted on changing the plot. Through 1973, which included the show’s two final seasons in reruns, he continued to work on it.
