James Goodnight Children
James Goodnight and Ann Baggett Goodnight had three children together: Leah, Susan, and James. While all three are successful in their own right, none of them have shown interest in continuing their father’s legacy at SAS.
Leah Goodnight
Leah Goodnight, the eldest of the Goodnight children, earned an economics degree from Duke University.
She went on to establish the Beanie & Cecil boutique apparel stores, which are situated in Wilmington and Raleigh. Additionally, she served as the marketing director for her father’s Umstead Hotel and Spa.
Susan Goodnight
Susan Goodnight attended the same Wake County schools as her older sister, Leah.
James Arthur Goodnight
The youngest of the three Goodnight children, James Arthur Goodnight, graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in psychology and history. Today, he purchases historic properties in Raleigh and renovates them.
James Goodnight’s fascination with machines that can help people was the impetus for his venture into computer technology.
He earned a PhD in Statistics and began working at North Carolina State University, where he helped develop a General Purpose Statistical Analysis System to evaluate agriculture data.
After successfully serving 100 customers, Goodnight and his associates established the SAS Institute in 1976.
Additionally, he programmed software for electrical equipment that was used in ground stations for the Apollo Capsule, giving him insight into corporate employment culture. Today, Goodnight is well-known for his employee-friendly policies at SAS.
Conclusion
James Goodnight’s children have each carved out successful careers for themselves, but none of them have chosen to continue the SAS legacy. Despite this, James Goodnight’s work at SAS has left a lasting impact on the technology industry, and his employee-friendly policies are still celebrated today.
