James Goodnight, widely regarded as the “Godfather of data analytics,” is an entrepreneur and technology visionary.

As the co-founder of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) Institute, he has revolutionized the field of data analysis and created one of the most successful software companies in the world.

But Goodnight’s achievements extend far beyond the business world, as he and his family are deeply committed to philanthropy and education.

Goodnight was born on January 6, 1943, to Albert Goodnight and Dorothy Patterson Goodnight.

His parents ran a hardware store in Wilmington, North Carolina, where James worked as a youth. However, they never limited his dreams, and he went on to pursue a career in computer technology.

Goodnight earned his PhD in Statistics and joined North Carolina State University to help create a General Purpose Statistical Analysis System for evaluating agricultural data.

After successfully catering to 100 customers, Goodnight and his friends opened the SAS Institute in 1976.

Today, SAS is used by over 70,000 universities, organizations, and governments worldwide.

Goodnight’s employee-friendly policies have made SAS one of the best companies to work for, and his work ethic and entrepreneurial skills are widely admired.
