In Astoria, a hit-and-run driver fatally struck and murdered a 16-year-old kid who was riding a bicycle.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, according to police, he was using a Citi Bike e-bike close to 21st Avenue and 21st Street.

A 2022 BMW X7 that was heading south on 21 Street struck Jaydan McLaurin as he reached the junction of 21st Avenue.

In a 25 mph zone, the automobile was allegedly traveling at 45 to 50 mph. After hitting the adolescent, the driver of the BMW originally halted, but when he became uneasy, he drove away.

When McLaurin arrived at the hospital, doctors declared him dead.

A little while later, near 23rd Street and 22nd Drive, the BMW was discovered to be empty. Yaser Ibrahim, 18, the driver, was found and taken into custody, according to a later police announcement.

He was charged with fleeing the scene of a fatal collision, violating the law regarding windshield tint, and driving without a license when he was arraigned Tuesday evening. Ibrahim was given supervised release and is scheduled to appear in court again in June.

McLaurin played basketball at the Variety Boys and Girls Club while he wasn’t in class. Charles Melone, his coach, described McLaurin as unique.
