The Oklahoma native inked a deal with Capitol Records in 1962 as a folk performer, and her first album, Wednesday’s Child is Full of Woe, was released the following year. When “He Walks Like a Man” entered the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964, it was her first chart appearance. After a year, Miller’s “Queen of the House,” an answer to Roger Miller’s (no relation, though both performers were raised in Oklahoma) “King of the Road,” became a crossover smash, climbing to the top five on the Hot Country Singles chart and No. 12 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Miller won the 1966 Grammy for best country & western vocal performance-female for her performance of “Queen of the House”; she was also nominated that year for best new country & western artist. In the same ceremony, Roger Miller won six Grammys for his performance of “King of the Road” and his album The Return of Roger Miller.

Miller stopped performing in the early 1980s so that she could spend more time with her family, which included husband Monty Brooks and daughter Robin. In addition, she assisted in running Brooks’ quarter horse breeding and training company on the couple’s Blanchard, Oklahoma property. She released a string of gospel CDs in the ’90s.
Miller began performing with her daughter and grandchildren as Jody Miller & Three Generations after the death of her husband Brooks in 2014. (In 2018, they released the single “Where My Picture Hangs on the Wall.) Miller joined fellow female artists Susie McEntire and Gayla Peevey in being inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2018. Miller recorded her final project in 2020; it’s an album called Wayfaring Stranger, and it’s set to be released by Heart of Texas Records in 2021.
Miller’s longtime agent Jennifer McMullen has commented, “Jody Miller’s talent cannot be understated.” She spoke with the sweetest inflections and tones, as if God himself had given her the gift of interpretation. She made it appear so effortless that it took a few listens to fully appreciate the quality of what she was producing. Miller’s family includes her son Montana Sullivan and granddaughter Layla Sullivan, as well as her daughter Robin Brooks Sullivan and her husband Shawn Sullivan, and her sisters Carol Cooper and Vivian Cole.
