The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina residents welcomes UH’s Kelvin Sampson home.

Karen Sampson stood in Greenville, North Carolina, proudly displaying her pinecone bracelet, a holy object to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

When Coach Sampson flew James Chavis, Ronnie’s son, to an Oklahoma basketball program, James was in sixth grade. James Chavis told ABC13 that leaving his tiny Lumbee community to see everything Coach Sampson created at OU was a life-changing experience.

He continues to be motivated by Sampson years afterward. It’s incredible to consider that a person of our heritage is leading the best squad in the country, he said.

With Kelvin and Karen Sampson, Rita Locklear shared a childhood. Their friendship has developed, and she has supported Kelvin at each point as he has traveled.

“He has never lost sight of who he is, including his tribe, family, and neighborhood. Simply put, he gives back in any manner he can. They have welcomed you with the same warmth as if you were entering their living room. And wherever he has been, he has offered our town his home “said Locklear.
