On Thursday, May 18, sepsis claimed the life of Ted Silary, 72, of Voorhees, a longtime journalist for the Daily News, Bulletin, and Montgomery Publishing Co.

Mr. Silary, who was for more than three decades Philadelphia’s undisputed king of high school sportswriting, was also a soft-spoken mentor to dozens of other writers and editors and a passionate supporter of high school athletes.

From1977 through 2013, he covered their highs and lows, victories and losses, and life in the background in Philadelphia for the Daily News.

Indeed, Mr. Silary’s reporting made even common high school athletes into local celebrities, and his stories quickly spread online long before the internet existed.

He was renowned for assigning athletes nicknames like “Meatball” and “Goose,” and for writing heartfelt pieces like the 1985 essay on Ernie Gallagher, an orphan on the Father Judge basketball team.
