Mary Lou Retton is an American retired gymnast. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, she won a gold medal in the individual all-around competition, as well as two silver medals and two bronze medals. Retton’s performance made her one of the most popular athletes in the United States.

Mary Lou Retton is the daughter of Ronnie Retton and his wife Lois Retton. Her father Ronnie was a star athlete who led the West Virginia University basketball team to the 1959 NCAA final and began a career in professional baseball. Afterward, he owned a coal-mining equipment company, and her mother Lois was a homemaker.

Apart from Mary Lou, the couple have five children, three sons Ronnie Jr., Donnie, and Jerry, and a daughter Shari. Records had it that, Lois used to take Mary Lou, and her sister, Shari, to West Virginia University for gymnastics once a week.
