Tragic Passing of Military Veteran Dax Bakken During Ironman Competition
It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Dax Bakken, a military veteran, and loving father of three, who tragically collapsed and passed away during the bike portion of the Ironman Wisconsin triathlon on Sunday, September 12, 2023. This devastating incident has left the triathlon community and beyond in shock and sorrow.
Race organizers shared that Bakken was quickly identified as needing urgent medical assistance by a vigilant race staff member and an off-duty police officer. They heroically provided CPR until emergency medical services (EMS) arrived, and he was swiftly transported to a local hospital. Despite all efforts, Dax Bakken was pronounced deceased, and the exact cause of his passing is currently under investigation by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Dax Bakken was not only a participant in Operation Desert Storm, demonstrating his dedication to serving his country, but he also recently achieved a significant milestone by obtaining his master’s degree. He was employed as a senior developer and development manager at Whitsell Innovations in Madison, showcasing his commitment to his profession.
His dreams and rigorous training regimen were all aimed at achieving his goal of completing the challenging 140.6-mile triathlon, which entails a grueling 2.4-mile swim, an arduous 112-mile bike ride, and a demanding 26.2-mile run. Dax was the primary provider and pillar of support for his cherished family, which includes his wife Kristin, their 8-year-old daughter Maeve, and his two sons from a previous marriage.
In response to this heartbreaking loss, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to help raise funds for Dax Bakken’s beloved wife and children as they navigate this difficult time. The campaign aims to provide them with the support they need during this period of immense grief and hardship.
For Kristin Keir who lost her life partner, the love of her life Dax Bakken on September 10th. Dax (51) died competing in IRONMAN Wisconsin Triathlon. Dax had trained and dreamed of completing the IRONMAN. He had completed the swim and was well into the bike portion of the competition. Dax was a Military Veteran having served in Desert Storm. Kristin and Dax have an 8 year old daughter, Maeve. Dax also has two sons Finn and Liam. Dax had just completed his Masters Degree and was the primary support for his family. Kristin is employed part time as a hospice nurse. Dax’s tragic death has left his family devastated. The family greatly appreciates any monetary gifts to help defray expenses incurred for Kristin and Maeve, including Maeve’s education…and any love and prayers.’

It is important to note that Bakken’s tragic passing is not the first such incident to occur during an Ironman event. In 2019, two individuals lost their lives during the swimming portion of a shorter triathlon held in nearby Lake Monona. Ironman Wisconsin extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dax Bakken during this unimaginably difficult time. The race organizers are cooperating fully with local authorities to gather more information about the incident.
