The young mother, who is originally from Beaufort, had been residing in Sumter with her boyfriend, Burton’s Jonas Jerry Washington Jr., 24.

Theresa Van Dam, Sophia’s mother, reported that she last saw her daughter and grandchild on June 21. The last text message received from a family member was on June 24. When no additional contact was made, concerns regarding their well-being grew.

Sumter police were notified of Sophia and Matteo’s abduction on June 28 and immediately conducted a “welfare check” at the Sumter residence. While they tracked down Sophia Van Dam’s car at her residence, the young mother and her son were nowhere to be found.
