The search for a missing Beaufort native and his son in Sumter continues: Updates from the Investigation

Authorities in Sumter have been searching the area surrounding a Sumter home for Sophia Van Dam, 20, and her 2-year-old son, Matteo, who have been missing for two weeks. The young mother, who is originally from Beaufort, had been residing in Sumter with her boyfriend, Burton’s Jonas Jerry Washington Jr., 24.

Theresa Van Dam, Sophia’s mother, reported that she last saw her daughter and grandchild on June 21. The last text message received from a family member was on June 24. When no additional contact was made, concerns regarding their well-being grew.

Sumter police were notified of Sophia and Matteo’s abduction on June 28 and immediately conducted a “welfare check” at the Sumter residence. While they tracked down Sophia Van Dam’s car at her residence, the young mother and her son were nowhere to be found.

Sumter police returned to the area of the residence on Thursday for further investigation in their tireless search for Sophia and Matteo. However, no other information about the current investigation has been revealed at this time, as authorities remain focused on the search.
