“Neville Garrick, Renowned Graphic Artist for Bob Marley, Passes Away at 73”

Jamaican graphic artist Neville Garrick, acclaimed for his iconic album covers and artwork for reggae legends like Bob Marley, breathed his last on November 14, 2023, succumbing to cancer at the age of 73. Garrick’s artistic journey began in the early 1970s when he collaborated with Marley and the Wailers, leaving an indelible mark on the visual representation of reggae.

Garrick’s inaugural album cover for the band, “Rastaman Vibration” in 1976, featured a contemplative Marley against a burlap background. This artwork was recently honored as No. 22 on Billboard’s list of the top 100 album covers of all time, playing a pivotal role in establishing the enduring iconography of Marley. His subsequent covers for Marley, including “Exodus” and “Uprising,” became equally iconic, with his personal favorite being the posthumously released “Confrontation.”

Beyond Marley, Garrick’s artistic influence extended to the reggae movement, shaping its visual identity. He lent his creative vision to other musical luminaries like Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, and more. Garrick’s impact reached beyond album covers; he designed vibrant backdrops for Marley’s concerts and the Reggae Sunsplash festivals from 1981 to 1988.

In 1986, Garrick co-founded the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Jamaica, and served as its executive director. His contributions extended to the realm of film as a co-producer of the 1992 Marley documentary, “Time Will Tell.” Recently honored with Jamaica’s Order of Distinction in the Rank of Commander (CD), Neville Garrick leaves behind a legacy that transcends artistic boundaries and continues to resonate within the heart of reggae culture.
