A missing teen from Olympia is revealed to be the homicide victim discovered near Orting.
On Wednesday, the medical examiner confirmed the identity of the 51-year-old man whose body was discovered last week in his home about five miles east of Orting. He was allegedly murdered by teenagers from Olympia.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has released a statement confirming that Daniel McCaw died as a result of several gunshot wounds and stab wounds. According to court documents, McCaw didn’t show up to work for four days, prompting a welfare check by the Sheriff’s Department.
After McCaw’s body was discovered, deputies went to the homes of 16-year-olds Gabriel Davies and Justin Yoon and arrested them on murder charges. On Tuesday, the two appeared in Pierce County Superior Court to be charged on murder charges.
However, Davies’ father told detectives that his son had been threatened by McCaw’s “biker mates” and told to steal an item from a safe at the man’s home; this information is not included in the charging paperwork against the youths.
McCaw was in a relationship with Davies’ mother, according to the charging documents filed by the prosecution. The News Tribune has reported that the couple and Davies spent many years in their home in the 21700 block of 190th Street East.
The probable cause declaration submitted in the murder prosecution suggests that McCaw was murdered on August 28. It was discovered at around 2 a.m. that day that two “young skinny males” had come up from the man’s backyard and were seen on surveillance footage from the man’s DVR. Thieves in dark clothing and gloves broke in through a dog door.
Records claim that roughly 40 minutes after leaving a separate garage on his property, surveillance footage showed McCaw entering his home. The suspects leave immediately after McCaw’s dog bolts out the dog door, which is visible six minutes later.
Police verified the individuals shown in the tape with images of Davies and Yoon obtained from the state Department of Licensing. Prosecutors noted in the statement of probable cause that “it appeared to be them.”
