Roland Joffe Career

Joffé joined Granada Television as a trainee director in 1973 upon completion of university. While at Granada, he directed episodes of Coronation Street, Sam, The Stars Look Down, Crown Court, Bill Brand, and Headmaster.

Producer Tony Garnett wanted to hire Joffé as director for The Spongers within BBCs Play for Today series in 1977. However, the BBC declined to give Joffé clearance citing his political activities.

The BBC was cautious because Joffé had attended some Workers’ Revolutionary Party meetings in the early 1970s, even though he did not become a party member. In the end, BBC withdrew its reservations on Joffé’s appointment after Tony Garnett threatened to go public about the issue. The Spongers went on to win the prestigious Prix Italia award.

Joffé also directed a scene in BBC’s Second City Firsts in 1977 and later two more plays for Play for Today: The Legion Hall Bombing, 1979 and the United Kingdom, 1981. In 1979, he coordinated the TV play No, Mama, No by Verity Bargate for the ITV Playhouse arrangement.
