The record label Sims signed with in 1986, Sleeping Bag Records, is no longer in business. In 1986, she released her first successful single, “(You Are My) All and All,” which was produced by Kurtis Mantronik and peaked at No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it debuted at #51 on the Dance Chart and eventually reached #6.

In 1988, Sims released a new single titled “Come into My Life,” which was also produced by Kurtis Mantronik and reached at No. 10 on the US Billboard R&B Chart and No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart. Despite being her only top-10 single on the R&B chart, this became her biggest hit. Her duet with Jimmy Castor, “Love Makes a Woman,” and “All and All,” both reached the top 40. After the success of the title track on the UK Singles Chart, Sims’ debut album, Come into My Life, debuted at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 22 on the US R&B Albums Chart.
Except for “Love Makes a Woman,” every song on the album was written by Sims. After its release in 1989, All About Love by Sims peaked at position No. 64 on the UK Albums Chart.

After Sleeping Bag Records was purchased by Warlock Records in 1992, Sims’ contract with the latter label was absorbed, and she released the song “Who’s Crying Now” in 1994.

She collaborated with record producers Junior Vasquez and Glen Frisica to release the track “What the World Needs Now is Love” off her album A New Beginning in 2006.

The original studio versions of her songs may be found on the first disc of the 2009 double-CD Come into My Life: the Very Best of Joyce Sims, while the second disc features extended mixes. In the same year that she began working on a new album, she also established her own record label, August Rose Records.

Sims collaborated with Maxi Priest, a reggae singer, on a track for his 2014 album Love Song.

Randy Crawford, Angie Stone, and Snoop Dogg have all covered or sampled songs by Sims, and you can hear her music on the soundtrack for the film Species. Using her own record label, August Rose Records, Sims released “Wishing You Were Here” and a second album, Back in Love Again.

Death

On October 15, 2022, Sims passed away. That made her 63 years old.

When Kurtis Mantronik produced “All and All” for Sims in 1986, it became a top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Two years later, “Come Into My Life” became Sims’ signature song. Over the next few years, she released a string of hit charters like “Lifetime Love,” “Walk Away,” and “Looking for a Love.”

Most of Sims’ hits came from her own compositions, but she also showed her skill as a song stylist by remaking Barbara Acklin’s “Love Makes a Woman,” which charted in the top 30.

Although Sims’ string of hits tapered off around the end of the ’90s, she kept working steadily into the ’00s, gaining a big fan base in Europe thanks to her performances of R&B and Gospel. This summer, she dropped a rendition of Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” that received a lot of positive feedback and was featured as a SoulTracks First Listen.

The loss of such a multifaceted artist will be deeply felt throughout the music industry, since her influence on the industry as a whole was far bigger than her massive success over the last 35 years.
