On June 23, McReynolds, a bluegrass legend who was no longer in his immediate circle, passed away. When the news of his death spread, many people were shocked and in pain. Generations of bluegrass artists will continue to be inspired by his influence.

Joy McReynolds’ announcement this morning that her husband, Jesse McReynolds, of the Jim & Jesse fame, had entered hospice care brought extremely sad news to Nashville.

Jesse has been a full-time bluegrass musician for 70 years, which is hard to believe. With his brother Jim serving as their first guitarist, they issued their debut album as Jim & Jesse in 1952.

After five decades of performing on the radio and live concerts, the McReynolds brothers received cancer diagnoses in 2002. While Jim passed away from cancer, Jesse performed for another 20 years.

Jesse Lester McReynolds was an American bluegrass musician. His innovative cross-picking and split-string mandolin playing techniques made him particularly well-known. McReynolds was born in Coeburn, Virginia.

He and his brother Jim begin playing together around 1947. They were first known as “The McReynolds Brothers.”

In 1951, guitarist Larry Roll worked with Jesse and Jim to record ten gospel songs for Kentucky Records under the name “The Virginia Trio.”
