Mother and son Andrew Nguyen bodies were eventually confirmed as having been discovered outside a multi-story building at UC Irvine on Tuesday.

The bodies of a 77-year-old mother and her son were discovered Tuesday at UC Irvine in what is believed to be a murder-suicide, according to the Irvine Police Department.

According to Orange County sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Steinle, the suspect was 36-year-old Andrew Nguyen Doan of Irvine, and the victim was 77-year-old Thao Thai Nguyen of Irvine.

Police from UC Irvine were called to the campus’ Social Science Plaza at around 3:52 p.m. after several people reported seeing two people lying on the ground outside of a tall building. Police reported that a man and woman were discovered deceased at the spot.

It was described by investigators as a possible murder-suicide. According to Irvine police, Doan threw his mother from the fourth or fifth floor of a “multi-story building” before jumping to his death from the same landing.

Sgt. Karie Davies of the Irvine Police Department stated that officers had previous encounters with Doan, the most recent of which was in 2019 for a service call involving mental health issues.

Tuesday night, UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman issued a statement in response to the tragedy.
