The two were high school lovers who met at an Ella Fitzgerald concert while Bob was attending high school in Missouri; they began dating when he was 15. They got married on January 12, 1945, when Bob was 21 and Dorothy Jo was 20.

On September 4, 1972, Barker began hosting the CBS revival of The Price Is Right which was over three decades after he married his wife, hence, he was married when he did The Price Is Right.
