The final season of Supernatural is full of heartwrenching moments, with one of the most recent moments being when Castiel (Misha Collins) made the final sacrifice to save the life of Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles).
However, Castiel (along with Jack) has, due to the natural order of death for angels, been to the Empty. Before losing his grace, Castiel was the only known Seraph in Supernatural.
Castiel and Muriel are taken to the anarchist angel Malachi, the leader of one side of the angel civil war (the other side being headed by the angel Bartholomew ), and tortured for information on Metatron. Muriel is killed in the process. Eventually, Malachi leaves Castiel with the angel Theo who tells Castiel he wants to defect to Metatron’s side.
However, Castiel (along with Jack) has, due to the natural order of death for angels, been to the Empty. Before losing his grace, Castiel was the only known Seraph in Supernatural. He lost this power when Metatron stole his grace.
Who played Castiel in Supernatural?
While not human, the angel Castiel (Misha Collins), proved just as resilient against permanent death, at least until Supernatural ended. Here are all the times he died and came back.
Now without powers, Castiel is trying to live as a human by season 9’s “I’m No Angel.” Cas is taken in by a seemingly kind woman named April, but she turns out to be a Reaper in disguise, who tortures him for information. Sam and Dean attempt a rescue, but April stabs Cas to death. He’s resurrected by a major Supernatural season 9 main character Gadreel, an angel who’s taken up residence inside Sam in order to heal him – or at least that’s what the manipulative angel told Dean.
president and impregnated his girlfriend Kelly Kline. Kelly became pregnant with a Nephilim, a half-angel/half-human being with powers beyond magnitude, which would go on to become Sam and Dean’s pal Jack. In the season finale, Castiel is trying to get Kelly through the birthing process and also keep Lucifer away from corrupting his new son. The unborn Jack’s power creates a rift between dimensions, leading to what would become known as Supernatural ‘s “Apocalypse World.” Lucifer eventually gets trapped there after a tussle with Mary Winchester, but not before stabbing Castiel to death with an angel blade. He’s later awakened inside The Empty by Jack’s powers, then literally annoys a cosmic being called The Shadow into resurrecting him.
It’s a testament to the quality of Supernatural ‘s writing and acting that they managed to keep these ongoing deaths dramatic and moving, since it became clear most of them wouldn’t stick . Being a show about extraordinary things routinely gave Supernatural characters a path backward from the other side. Granted, these resurrections often came at a heavy cost, and in some cases led to further misery.
What did Castiel promise to do in the Shadow of the Empty?
Having promised to keep the boy safe, however, Castiel bargained his own soul in return for Jack’s safety. Ever the sadist, the Shadow of the Empty promised to collect its prize when Castiel felt a moment of true happiness.
Played by Misha Collins, Castiel swooped into Sam and Dean’s lives in Supernatural ‘s season 4 premiere, resurrecting the eldest Winchester brother from the dead and joining their crusade against Lucifer.
In the previous episode of Supernatural, the Empty revealed Billie’s true plan was to usurp God and set the world back to its natural state. No more resurrecting Winchesters, no more parallel universe counterparts, no more phantom girlfriend for Sam. So when folks begin disappearing in “Despair,” Team Free Will logically conclude that Billie is responsible, and in the ensuing clash for possession of Jack, Dean deals Death a devastating, fatal blow using her own blade – a mirror of how he killed the original Grim Reaper back in season 10. Already harboring a deep resentment for the Winchesters and Castiel, Billie decides her final act will be to kill Dean once and for all, and she relentlessly chases the eldest Winchester and Castiel through the halls of the Bunker.
When the fuse runs out and Jack ignites, the Empty’s Shadow enters a frenzy, screaming that the cosmic explosion ” made it loud .”. Jack is teleported outta there before the meaning of these words can be elaborated upon, but this “loudness” will surely be explained in the coming episodes.

While Supernatural fans knew death was inevitably coming in season 15 (literally, as it turns out), they perhaps weren’t emotionally prepared for the big farewell at the end of “Despair.”. With only 2 episodes left, Castiel appears to be dead, sacrificing himself after a heartfelt declaration of love. But is the angel gone for good, …
There is simply no better way to bid farewell to Castiel in Supernatural. The emotional impact of Castiel’s (latest) Supernatural death suggests his departure will stick this time, but Supernatural has previous for retconning major deaths, even after a heartfelt goodbye.
As Supernatural ‘s final villain, Chuck has no reason to revive the Winchesters’ greatest ally, but if God experienced a change of heart in his final moments, he might be convinced to return Castiel one final time before dying himself. Alternatively, Amara could seize control, and bring Cass back herself.
How many times has Castiel died?
Like the Winchester brothers, Supernatural ‘s Castiel is also no stranger to death. Ever since his introduction in Season 4, the angel has died at least five different times. He has been blown to smithereens by Lucifer and, most recently, died at the hands of the reaper April Kelly.
To add to the ever-growing number of potential deaths, Castiel ordered a Winchester special and made a deal with The Empty last season and co-showrunner Andrew Dabb promises that Castiel will have to deal with that in Season 15 , saying: I think given what’s happened at the end of last season to Jack… the last thing Cas is worried about right now is …
However, there was a consequence to bringing Jack back: Cas made a deal with the Shadow to save him from being dragged back to The Empty forever. Cas convinced the Shadow that it could take him instead of Jack (even though Cas was going to wind up there anyway). A soul for a soul.
He’s going to have a say. For background info: Season 14 saw Jack die and go to Heaven, but Castiel (lovingly nicknamed Cas) was convinced that the nephilim couldn’t stay there. Without Jack back on Earth, chaos would reign and thousands (maybe millions) of people would die. However, there was a consequence to bringing Jack back: Cas made …
It seems Cas can’t catch a break. Given that Supernatural is entering its 15th and final season, the stakes are much higher than usual for all involved. Previously, Andrew Dabb teased that Dean and Sam were going to lose people “in a real way,” implying that future character deaths will likely be final.
Still, it’s nice to believe that everything will work itself out in the end. Supernatural Season 15 premieres Thursday, October 10 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. If you’re not caught up on all 14 seasons, you can now stream them all on Netflix before the new season kicks off.
After all, Dean was sentenced to eternity in Hell, but he was saved from eternal damnation by Cas. Though Team Free Will has bigger things to worry about heading into Season 15, Dean and Sam will no doubt work to get Cas out of his deal, consequences be damned.
