After being attacked by the demon, who she initially thinks is the ghost of her misguided spouse, she finds herself in the small boat on the lake, the scene of her husband’s suicide.

When director David Bruckner first read the script for The Night House, a puzzle-box horror film about a grieving widow (Rebecca Hall) unraveling an architectural mystery within the beautiful lakeside home built by her dead husband, he was troubled by it. He joked it wouldn’t leave him alone.

Whether or not those things permeated your mind on a regular basis ultimately doesn’t matter — you’ll think about it after you see The Night House. Though the film does tackle some very real threats and horrors, the ultimate villain is truly an abstract one.
