The Texas Tech Red Raiders’ quarterback in American football is Donovan Smith. Prior to the 2020 season, Smith sustained a shoulder injury; as a result, he missed all of the games that year. Following shoulder surgery, the following spring he went back to practice. DeAndre Smith, the son of Smith, coached Texas Tech’s running backs from 2019 to 2021. He will begin serving as the New York Giants’ running backs coach in 2022.

In his high school years, Smith mostly played wide receiver while also filling in as the team’s backup quarterback at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. Prior to the 2019–20 academic year, Donovan would switch to Frenship High School in the Wolfforth neighborhood of Lubbock, Texas. Smith completed 212 of 328 passes for 3,114 yards, 26 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and 489 running yards and 14 rushing touchdowns in his final season as a senior. For the 2019 season, Smith concluded his senior year with the 32nd-most throwing yards in the state of Texas. When Smith graduated from high school, 247Sports.com rated him as a three-star recruit. In preference to Nevada, San Diego State, and Utah State, he chose Texas Tech.
