Montgomery excelled in football, track, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse while attending St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas, Texas. He participated in football as a quarterback, running back, and wide receiver for the Lions. He gained 823 rushing yards on 93 runs, 17 receptions, and 10 total touchdowns as a senior. Throughout his high school career, he had 118 catches and 36 total touchdowns.

Montgomery excelled in both the long jump and the sprint, competing as a top track and field athlete. He won the 100-meter dash (10.81 seconds) and 200-meter dash (22.20 seconds) at the 2011 SPC Championships. He also anchored the winning 4×100 relay team (43.15 s). At the 2011 Lancaster Meet of Champions, he recorded a long jump leap of 6.55 meters (21 feet, 3 inches), which was a personal best.
