A commercial for the Jumbo Jack featuring Rodney Allen Rippy (circa 1973). Television commercials in the early 1970s featured child actor Rodney Allen Rippy. In the commercials, Rippy was seen trying to wrap his mouth around the super-sized Jumbo Jack hamburger.

The voice actor for Jack is Dick Sittig (who is also the creative director of the ad firm that does the Jack in the Box ads). He doesn’t do the actual in-person acting though (though he does direct the commercials), they just hire random dudes to be in the mask.

The commercials were used to promote the new Jack in the Box Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich (now known as Jack’s Spicy Chicken), with the girls dancing in “the Jack groove.” At the 1998 Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) Show, one of the Spicy Crispy Girls commercials won the top award for humor.

In 1993, a major food contamination crisis was linked to Jack in the Box restaurants and by 1994, a series of lawsuits and negative publicity took their tolls and pushed their corporate parent, Foodmaker Inc. to the verge of bankruptcy.

A rotating clown head was also atop the large signs at each location. In 1980 , the chain decided to establish a more “mature” image by introducing a wider variety of menu items and (most notably) discontinuing the use of Jack.
