Denji’s fellow devil hunter, Aki, embodies many of the standard elements of a shonen protagonist’s rival . He’s far more serious and reserved than Denji, with the two initially having a combative relationship, and his motivation is revenge for what he suffered during his tragic backstory.
As the manga continues, Makima’ s terrifying power is revealed bit by bit until she is unmasked as the main villain of the series, the Control Devil. Her psychological manipulation of Denji is more frightening than any of the series’ barrage of weapons, but her seemingly noble motivations and the unclear genuineness of her relationships stop her from seeming flat or completely unlikeable.
Himeno, Aki’s partner and mentor, is one of the first side characters introduced in the series, and quickly becomes extremely likable. Her laid-back attitude offers a contrast to Makima’s perfect poise and shows both Denji and the readers that there’s definitely room for levity in the Public Safety Devil Hunters.
Even then, she still gets pulled into the action after the Chainsaw Man shows up at the fast-food joint she works at. Against all the odds, though, Kobeni is one of the few characters who actually survive the story.
