According to his relatives, John Y. Brown Jr., a former governor of Kentucky, died at the age of 88.

Brown, a businessman and politician from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, governed as its 55th chief executive.

The former governor’s daughter, Pamela Brown, issued the following statement on behalf of the family upon his passing:

“Our father, John Y. Brown Jr., not only had the unachievable ambition in his heart but also pursued it all the way to the finish. He consistently overcame the odds thanks to his unmatched optimism and enthusiasm for life. For him, every day was a thrilling new experience. He was a genuine native of Kentucky was beaming with love for his native state and its people.

While Brown held the office of governor from 1979 to 1983, many people will likely remember him for his business pursuits, ownership of sports teams, and marriage to former Miss America Phyllis George.

He was the son of former U.S. Representative John Y. Brown, Sr., and was born in Lexington in 1933.

Following a brief tenure in the family’s law firm, Brown and a group of investors purchased Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1964 for $2 million, establishing Col. Harland Sanders’ eateries as a major international franchise.

In the 1970s, Brown invested in many seasoned basketball organizations.

Brown earned the Democratic party’s candidacy for governor of Kentucky in 1979 after marrying his second wife, Phyllis George, and went on to upset the incumbent, Louie B. Nunn.

During Brown’s tenure as governor, the state faced financial constraints, layoffs, and difficult economic conditions. His lieutenant governor, Martha Layne Collins, went on to become Kentucky’s first and only female governor after serving a single term.

In an effort to return to politics, Brown ran for governor in the Democratic party in 1987, but he was unsuccessful.

Following the loss, Brown refocused on his business endeavors, joining forces with country music icon Kenny Rogers to launch a chain of chicken restaurants, and later with actress Suzanne Somers to launch a meal prep kitchen concept.

The Harvard Business School’s list of the “Great American Business Leaders of the 20th Century” includes Brown due to his commercial successes.
