She was born to Ruth Roper and Reuben Givens and has a sister.
At the age of 15, she enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College as a pre-medical major. She graduated at the age of 19. During her time in school, she acted in daytime dramas.
In 1986, she landed her breakthrough role of Darlene Merriman in the ABC sitcom Head of the Class. She remained a member of the cast during its 5-year run. She has also appeared in roles in productions such as The Women of Brewster Place and Boomerang.
Her rocky marriage and later divorce from boxer Mike Tyson caused a lot of media controversy.
The pair got married on February 7, 1988, however, Givens claimed that Tyson was physically abusive before their marriage. Givens suffered a miscarriage in June 1988, however, Tyson believed that her pregnancy was only a ruse to push the to a marriage. He noted that during her pregnancy, she did not gain a single pound.
In a joint interview with Tyson on 20/20 in September 1988, Givens told Barbara Walters that life with Tyson as “torture, pure hell, worse than anything I could possibly imagine,”
Their divorce was finalized on Valentine’s day in 1989.
She adopted her first son Michael “Buddy” Givens in 1993. Four years later, she married her Svetozar Marinković tennis instructor, but they divorced months later. In 1999, she had a second son with her ex-boyfriend, tennis player Murphy Jensen.
