From a technical point of view, Rengoku’s death does more than act as a trigger for Tanjiro realizing his potential. The Flame Hashira’s demise sets a balance of power in Demon Slayer, establishing the demons as having the upper hand and being formidable opponents, even for the Hashira.
The situation is turned upside down when a higher-ranking demon known as Akaza shows up. Rengoku is forced to fight the demon alone, and he is dealt a mortal wound. He deals quite a lot of damage to Akaza which forces the demon to flee much to Tanjiro’s horror.
Tanjiro usually requires a trigger: be it the massacre of his family, protecting Nezuko, or watching Rengoku die in front of his eyes. From a technical point of view, Rengoku’s death does more than act as a trigger for Tanjiro realizing his potential.
Rengoku was respected and well liked amongst all of the Hashira because of his constant positive attitude and passionate spirit. Even Giyuu, Muichiro, and Sanemi, who are usually anti-social consider him a good guy and pleasant to be around.
